Chapter 30

I need somewhere to be vulnerable.

I shut the door and turn.

Maz and Birdie stare at me.

They don’t know what I’ve been told.

I replay the same thought.

Seth has killed someone. For Cullen and Archer.

Because Seth wants to be a Savage.

He wants…

I’m thankful for the zaza.

It keeps me calmer than I should be right now.

“What happened?” Maz asks. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

“Did something happen to Cullen? To his face?” Birdie asks.

“Shut up, Birdie,” Maz says.

“He’s got a beautiful face,” Birdie says.

“I need to trust you both,” I manage to say. “With myself.”

“What does that mean?” Maz asks.

“Is that sexual?” Birdie asks. “I’ll need a lot to drink…”

“I need to be vulnerable right now,” I say. “I need to let my knees give out. I need you both to catch me. But I need you both to remember that I’m an Heir.”

Maz moves closer to me. “You’re an Heir, Jaci Ruby. But you’re living with Thorns. We’re the most vulnerable ones here. We have to fight for everything we want.” She grabs my arms. “We’ve got your back.”

I nod at Maz and I let myself collapse.

Maz pulls me against her.

Birdie is right there too.

They guide me to the couch and sit me down.

Birdie hands me something to drink.

Mixing alcohol and zazas is really stupid.

I don’t care.

“The bomb threat was fake,” I whisper. “They called it in themselves. They did it themselves. It was all…”

“We kind of knew that,” Maz says. “Right?”

“I know the reason why,” I say. “They made Seth…”

I look away.

I’m not sure I’m supposed to say anything.

But I trust Maz and Birdie.

They’re my best friends. They’re like family to me.

“Say nothing else,” Birdie says as she places a hand to my back.

The entire mood changes.

Their eyes are strong, stern, yet forgiving.

They understand what I’m saying without me saying it.

“You’re not used to it,” Maz says. “The dark truth of who we all are. The version of justice that all our families abide by.”

“But Seth isn’t…” I say.

“That’s something you’ll have to deal with at a different time,” Birdie says.

“Accept what?” I ask.

“Jaci, you know Seth pretty well, right?” Maz asks.

I nod. “Yes.”

“You know this isn’t his first time…”

“I know,” I whisper.

“Then let it go,” she says.

“Maz is right,” Birdie says. “This is something we all have to just deal with. You didn’t get this way when Archer handled a situation for me. Remember?”

How could I forget? It felt like it was just yesterday…

“You have feelings for Seth,” Maz says. “Strong feelings. Different than what you have for Cullen and Archer.”

“It’s just because I’ve known him longer,” I say. “Nothing else.”

“Yeah right,” Birdie says. “But whatever you say.”

I stand up. “It’s everything! Okay? It’s fucking everything! Every single fucking time I try to fit in here and try to catch my breath something else happens. I want to know who my fucking family is and what my destiny is. I need to prepare for it. I need to know what’s next. And the constant fucking threats and violence, murder and…”

“Sex,” Birdie says.
